Red Side Up bolsters finishing offering with Horizon investment

Red Side Up has invested in a Horizon CRF-362 Creaser/Folder from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS), aiming to resolve crease and fold issues and improve the reliability of its finishing operation.

The family-run print business, based in Haverhill, Suffolk, was established in 2011 and specialises in the digital printing of books, manuals and newsletters, alongside print finishing and binding services. Its production equipment includes Kyocera inkjet technology as well as Xerox and Fuji Xerox digital toner presses.

Paul McGerty, managing director at Red Side Up, said the company had considered several options before selecting the Horizon system.

“We wanted something that would end crease and fold issues. We heard about the Horizon CRF-362 from an IFS sales representative and we reviewed other systems but this, for us, was an investment for the next generation. It has already helped with a new contract we’ve recently undertaken.”

The investment follows Red Side Up’s experience with a number of used finishing systems, which the company said had not delivered the reliability it required. Its previous experience with Horizon equipment was also a factor in the decision.

Mr McGerty added: “We tried a number of second hand devices, none of which have been sufficiently robust or reliable. We have also had a good experience of Horizon service with an existing folder which tipped the balance.”

The Horizon CRF-362 is designed to crease and fold light and heavyweight stocks, both coated and uncoated, in a single pass. It can produce up to ten crease lines on a sheet and uses impact matrix creasing technology intended to minimise cracking of the stock or printed image.

Set-up and changeovers, including fold patterns, the number of creases and up/down crease selection, are controlled through a colour touchscreen.

“We chose Horizon CRF-362 because of its levels of automation, ease of use, and build quality,” said Mr McGerty. “We also liked its simplicity and reliable output. The excellent service provided by IFS was important too.”
